SMEC, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, has been appointed as the Owner’s Engineer for a 60MWac floating solar power project at the Saguling hydropower dam reservoir in West Java, Indonesia. The project is being developed by PT Indo ACWA Tenaga Saguling and will be built on the existing reservoir.

The Saguling floating solar project is part of Indonesia’s broader effort to expand its renewable energy capacity and reach its target of Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Floating solar installations generate power on water bodies, reducing land use pressure and potentially improving solar panel performance due to cooling from the water. The technology can also help reduce reservoir evaporation and make use of existing hydropower infrastructure.

SMEC will oversee environmental impact assessments and the integration of battery energy storage systems to improve grid stability and support consistent renewable energy delivery.

Beyond Saguling, SMEC is also involved in several other floating solar projects in Indonesia, including:

  • A large floating solar development in the Riau Islands
  • Multiple initiatives with a major mining company in South Sulawesi
  • A floating solar project for a mining firm in Central Kalimantan

“SMEC’s appointment as Owner’s Engineer for the Saguling Floating Solar project reaffirms our commitment to delivering impactful solutions for Indonesia’s energy transition,” the company said in a statement. “By harnessing the potential of floating solar and hybrid systems, SMEC is helping Indonesia realise its vision for a cleaner, more resilient energy future – one project at a time.”
